Description
1670 HORACE Roman Classical Literature Acron Bond Commentary Odes Aldus Manutius
“We are but dust and shadow.”
? Horace
Horace was the most important Roman poet during the 1st-century BC. He composed satires, odes, epistles, and other poetic verses; works that have been referenced and studied for centuries. Horaces works have yielded some famous quotes that have influenced cultures and societies including “Carpe Diem!” (seize the day) and “Pactum serva” (keep the faith).
This 1670 Hackiana edition of the works of Horace was published Leiden and Rotterdam, collected and edited with commentary by Johannes Bond. Bond, somewhat controversially, is known to have edited the text of Horace in a way that changed the meaning of some passages (Wiesen). Many editions, including this edition, feature commentary of 3rd-century scholar Helenius Acron, which Bond also copied and edited. Other notable inclusions in this edition is Aldus Manutiuss famed essay on the metrics of Horace and Schrevels indexes.
