Soft cover [some wear & soiling]; 4.1/2" x 7.1/2"; inscription on the front endpaper, 166 pages including Indexes of Thorvaldsen's works, Index of Artists and Contents + 16 plates with monochrome illustrations on glossy paper printed on both sides, some wear and soiling, very good condition.
Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), is regarded as one of the leading sculptors of European Neoclassic style. In his time, he was seen as the successor of master sculptor Antonio Canova. Among his more famous public monuments are the statues of Nicolaus Copernicus and Jozef Poniatowski in Warsaw; the statue of Maximilian I in Munich; and the tomb monument of Pope Pius VII, the only work by a non-Catholic in St. Peter's Basilica.
The Thorvaldsen Museum is a single-artist museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, dedicated to the art of Danish Neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen who lived and worked in Rome for most of his life (1796-1838). The museum is located on the small island of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen next to Christiansborg Palace. Designed by Michael Gottlieb Bindesboll, the building was constructed from 1838 to 1848 following a public collection of funds in 1837.
