Early, well-regarded work by social worker and community organization executive Dr John Slawson. This statistical psychology study of causes of juvenile delinquency, with data obtained at four New York State institutions for delinquent boys, was his 1926 Columbia PhD thesis. Slawson was earning his BS, MA and PhD from Columbia while working as an investigator and psychologist for the New York State Department of Welfare when compiling this study. "Our aim, therefore, in this study is to ascertain by the statistical method the contributory strengths of mental, physical, and environmental factors to male juvenile delinquency. Throughout our work we have kept the concept of multiple causal relation in mind, and have refrained, consequently, from unnecessarily overemphasizing any one factor." - Preface. "The comparative occurrence of defective or unusual characteristics in delinquent and non-delinquent groups is studied by statistical psychology, and correlation between such characteristics and delinquency is made." - Augustus Frederick Kuhlman; A Guide to Material on Crime and Criminal Justice; Kuhlman 1314. Major sections of Slawson's examination were: Intelligence and Male Juvenile Delinquency; Mechanical Aptitude; Psychoneurotic Responses; Physical and Psycho-Physical Factors; Environmental Factors (includes marital relations of parents and family size among others).
