Description
HURLEY (FRANK) 'Walking into the Face of a High Wind', vintage gelatin silver print, on the original thick card mount, original Fine Art Society Exhibition label, with pencil title and exhibition number '64' on verso, 330 x 458mm., [Between 1911-1914] Footnotes: Two members of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 'wind walking' at the Winter Quarters at Cape Denison. 'Experiments were tried in the steady winds; firmly planting the feet on the ground, keeping the body rigid and leaning over on the invisible support. This 'lying on the wind,' at equilibrium, was a unique experience. As a rule the velocity remained uniform; when it fluctuated in a series of gusts, all our experience was likely to fail, for no sooner had the correct angle for the maximum velocity been assumed than a lull intervened—with the obvious result' (Douglas Mawson, The Home of the Blizzard, Being the Story of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914, 1915.
