Henry Inglis Jodriel Sheldon-Williams (British, 1870-1940) Lord and Lady Curzon on the State Elephant, Lutchmann Pershad, 1903, Delhi Durbar signed and dated 'SHELDON.WILLIAMS. 05.' (lower left); bears inscription 'Lord & Lady Curzon on their/state Elephant. Delhi Durbar' (verso) watercolour and pencil 33.7 x 23.8cm (13 1/4 x 9 3/8in). Footnotes: For King Edward VII's Coronation Durbar in 1902, the Viceroy Lord Curzon and his wife led the procession on the same silver howdah in which the new King-Emperor had ridden during his visit to India in 1875–6. In this work, Lord and Lady Curzon are shown sitting in a silver howdah on the caparisoned State Elephant, named Lutchmann Pershad. An attendant stands behind the howdah, holding an umbrella over the couple. A driver sits just above the elephant's face.
