Description
An antique early 20th-century French faience character jug from Desvres, a center of stoneware production in Northern France. The piece represents the Jacquot character in tricorn and flower-patterned costume. Hand-painted. Marked FC4, 1647, France on the bottom. Mark of Charles Fourmaintraux-Houzel, who led the Desvres workshop ca. 1900 to 1930. Toby jugs are a type of ceramic ware that was developed by the Staffordshire potters in England in the 1760s.
