Description
Sergei Vasilkovsky, Ukrainian, Russian, 1854-1917, an oil on canvas laid on cardboard painting Kharkivshchyna, Kharkiv Oblast. The painting depicts a peaceful rural landscape with two peasant women among haystacks. Signed in Cyrillic lower left and monogrammed lower right, titled in Ukrainian on verso. Note: Serhii Ivanovych Vasylkivsky was one of the most prolific Ukrainian artists of the pre-revolutionary period and an expert on Ukrainian ornamentation and folk art. Vasylkivsky left behind almost 3,000 works of realist and impressionist art, sketches, drawings, a great number of which were lost during World War II. He was the first, after Taras Shevchenko, to draw upon subject matter from Ukraines past and completed a number of works on historical and ethnographic themes. One of a kind artwork.
