Description

A good early 20th century mahogany floorstanding regulator
Dent, 61 Strand & Royal Exchange, London, Clockmaker to the King, No.55557
The signed 10 inch repainted dial with angled silvered sight ring framing the Arabic minute band, subsidiary seconds with Observatory Marks and Roman hours, with three fine blued steel hands. The rectangular case with stepped moulded cornice over solid sides and a long glazed door with twin locks and an internal dust beading. The weight-driven movement with heavy plates united by substantial tapering pillars screwed through the backplate, Harrison's maintaining power to a four-wheel train with high count pinions terminating in a deadbeat escapement and wooden rod pendulum with brass cylindrical bob reading against a curved silvered beat scale. Together with a case key (which operates both locks), a crank winding key and a brass weight. 1.41m (4ft 8ins) high.

This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * TP

There is a 56 hour marine chronometer known by 'Dent, 61 Strand', with serial number 51519, which dates from 1901. There is also a half-plate tourbillion watch, also by 'Dent, 61 Strand', dated to 1906, and with the serial number 56423. Assuming the clock serial numbers roughly follow those for marine chronometers and watches, that would suggest a date for this regulator of around 1906, though this is not certain.
