Description
A William IV or early Victorian specimen marble, hardstone, mineral and blue John inlaid Ashford marble topped mahogany side table
1830-1845
The rectangular top inset with seventy seven interlocking lozenges of various specimens within an ultra shallow relief border decorated with a scrolling foliate branch interspersed by roses, thistles and with anthemion angles, above a cavetto frieze with a lappet clasped lower edge, on two scrolled X-form end supports, each carved and wrapped with lotus leaves and acanthus centred by a flowerhead, terminating in flared stiff leaf clasped block feet with recessed castors, with a lotus leaf wrapped baluster turned stretcher centred by a beaded collar, approximately: 71.5cm wide x 46.5cm deep x 76cm high, (28in wide x 18in deep x 29 1/2in high)
Footnotes:
It is interesting to note that the specimen top on the present lot appears to incorporate hardstones, marbles and minerals which are indigenous to Britain, whilst it is also clearly inlaid with various such specimens from abroad. Examples of the former are blue john whereas assorted tablets of the latter include malachite.

In light of this fact, perhaps a slightly more accurate description of the offered top is 'Anglo-Italian', possibly hinting that the undoubtedly British client who originally commissioned this piece, almost certainly during the 1830s or 1840s, had in fact been on the Grand Tour. But importantly they had consciously chosen not to ignore the fact that many beautiful stones could also be sourced from within their own country as well as from the continent.
