CAPE MUROTO has very beautiful lava formations, but Muroto-misaki (cape) is famous for other reasons as well. One is that it sits on the very edge of a plate in front of a subduction zone creating a very deep trench close to shore. Because of this proximity to the shore, the Japanese have run pipeline to tap into the deep sea water, which is said to have a very different mineral content than water from other sources, and is theoretically very good for you. You can buy deep sea water from Muroto in the grocery stores in Japan.

HIDEO NISHIYAMA (1911-1989) was born in 1911 in Kyoto. In 1936 he graduated from the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. The artist worked primarily as a painter. He exhibited with the state-sponsored exhibitions Bunten and Teiten. In 1954 he was appointed professor at Kyoto Gakugei University. In 1958 Hideo Nishiyama was awarded the the Ministry of Education Prize and in 1961 the Japan Art Institute Prize. In 1980 the artist was honored with a membership of the Japanese Art Institute. The woodblock prints that Hideo Nishiyama designed were published by Unsodo after world war II. Among his graphic works is a series Twelve Views of Kyoto.
