Description
A CHINESE BRONZE BUDDHA, XUANDE MARK, MING DYNASTY (1368-1644), EARLY 15TH CENTURY, cast bronze, with a relief four-character seal mark at the back, a flaming finial tops a domed curled hair over a serene expression, gazing eternally forward over a flared nose and supple lips and creased chin between pendulous earlobes suspending at either side of the cascading neck, seated in a relaxed lotus pose with Abhaya and Gyan mudras, a runner with "victory banner" auspicious symbol among clouds within diamond and bead patterns, raised on a bead chain edge platform of blooming lotus petals, sealed base. Height: 24" Width: 9 1/2" Depth: 14 3/4" Private Collection, Texas.
Condition
Apparent areas of white to green color patches throughout were noted on hair, neck, abdomen, and arms, traces of original lacquer decoration, advanced age and patina, surface wear, minor cracks, and damage to bronze.
