Hard boards, original green cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board [some wear]; 6" x 8.1/4"; color frontispiece, 390 pages including Index + 50 monochrome illustrations on glossy paper [printed on both sides], very good condition.
Arthur Stanley Riggs (1879-1952) was an American writer, editor and historian, noted for his biographies of Titian and Velázquez. In 1900, Riggs worked for the New York newspapers the Commercial Advertiser, The Mail and Express and The New York Times. He served as the director of the Archaeological Society of Washington from 1925 to 1935 and was editor of the society's magazine Art and Archaeology.
Tiziano Vecelli or Vecellio [1488/90-1576], known in English as Titian, was an Italian painter of the Renaissance, considered the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school. He was born in Pieve di Cadore, near Belluno. During his lifetime he was often called da Cadore, 'from Cadore', taken from his native region.
