Description
15TH / 16TH CENTURY EARLY PRINTED LATIN VOLUME, Philostratus, De Vita Apollonii Tyanei, Scriptor Luculentus a Philippo Beroaldo Castigatus, Bologna: Benedictus Hector, circa 1500. Bound in brown leather with embossed decorative design on covers and embossed gilt edges.
Catalogue Note: Text handwritten in ink on the first page identifies the publisher as "Benedictus Hectoris" (Benedetto Faelli, 1460-1523), an important Bologna printer. The editor Philippo Beroaldo (1453-1505) was an influential humanist scholar and teacher in Bologna. This volume is an early Latin edition of Philostratus' biography of Apollonius of Tyana, the Greek philosopher and mystic figure sometimes compared with Jesus of Nazareth.
Condition
Extensive wear to covers and spine, with possible losses to handwritten text on spine. Loose binding, with holes from insect damage to covers near spine. Some staining to front and back pages, and wear to gilt page edges. A note on the text is written in pencil on the first page, and some margins have additional notes in pencil. Some toning to interior pages, but printed text is very clear.
