Description
A Fine Thomas Annely Blunderbuss, third quarter of the 18th century. The flaring 20 1/2 in. iron barrel of approximately .80 caliber with ring decorated and shell and scroll engraved breech, the left side with London proof marks and Annely's mark of a crown over 'TA' within a sunken oval cartouche, breech plug tang with engraved shell and scroll decoration; flat unbridled lock plate with pointed tail with engraved foliate decoration, and engraved 'T/ANNELY' below the rounded pan, the inside of the plate unmarked; walnut stock with raised carved fleur-de-lis around the breech plug tang; brass furniture including a butt plate with stepped and pointed tang engraved with foliate scrolls, bow and quiver, trigger guard with engraved leaf finial, ordnance-style thumb piece with engraved foliate scroll decoration, openwork foliate scroll side plate, and sheet brass rammer pipes with bold ring decoration, wood rammer with brass tip. Overall lg. 36 in. CONDITION: Barrel is toned to finely mottled gray with very fine underlying pitting; lock has scattered very fine pitting, hammer has been repaired at the neck, steel spring is a replacement, lock functions properly; stock scattered ding and dents and small losses at the rear of the left side of the barrel channel, rammer may be original.
