Rare Relief Carved J.P. Beck Signed Pennsylvania Long Rifle Constructed with Sling Swivels, Lebanon Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, last quarter of the 18th century. 42 in. octagonal barrel bored to approximately .66 caliber, the top flat signed 'J*P*[Be]ck' and the underside with loop to support the forward sling swivel, the underside of the barrel marked 'INRI'; flat lock plate with stepped and pointed tail with gooseneck cock, unmarked on the interior; maple stock with figuring in the fore-end, the 1 3/4 in. wide butt with relief and incised carved foliate scrolls around the cheekpiece on the left side, the right side with sliding wood patch box, the nose with raised outline carving terminating in incised scrolls, scratch bead line along the lower edge of the butt, the area around the breech plug with raised foliate scrolls, lock and side plate plateaus with tear drop decoration at the rear, the underside of the stock forward of the trigger guard is decorated with incised scrollwork, and the rammer channel is bordered by carved molding terminating at the entry pipe with an incised scroll; brass furniture including a broad butt plate with short faceted and line decorated tang, trigger guard of typical Beck form with double incised lines at the forward end and mounting a sling swivel in the forward part of the bow with strong evidence of wear where the swivel contacts the trigger guard bow and finial, flat bevel edged side plate, and two faceted rammer pipes, the second pipe with wear where the sling swivel contacts its outside face, and a matching entry pipe, ash rammer with iron end and threaded cleaning jag. Overall lg. 57 1/2 in. CONDITION: Barrel toned to deep brown, lock toned to gray/brown and functions properly; stock is in very good overall condition with minor blemishes, short cracks and a short loss along the rammer channel; brass toned to a soft yellow.
