Description
Asahel Strong Norton's Carved Mount Independence Powder Horn, dated October 5, 1776. The cream-colored horn with carved inscription 'Asahel Strong Norton his horn Made/att Mount Independent Oct. ye 5 AD 1776' with a carefully carved map of Ticonderoga and Mount Independence illustrating southern end of Lake Champlain in the vicinity of Fort Ticonderoga peninsula showing a shore battery with boom extending across the lake, the floating bridge to Mount Independence with the shore and horseshoe batteries, and further decorated with a pine tree and leafy bush, the spout end with finely carved scalloping and fine double ring near the spout; the back end with a slightly convex pine plug secured with double holes in the side for a suspension cord. Overall lg. 11 1/4 in. CONDITION: Horn is in very good overall condition with chipping at the spout. Footnotes: Provenance Descended through the Norton's family in Indiana. Acquired from Harmon Leonard, late 1990s. Note Mount Independence is located directly across Lake Champlain from Fort Ticonderoga. It was the site of extensive fortifications and defensive works constructed by American forces beginning in July 1776. It was constructed to further strengthen the southern end of Lake Champlain and the portage to Lake George. A floating bridge spanned the lake between Mount Independence and Ticonderoga and is clearly shown on this powder horn as is a boom extending across the lake about a quarter of a mile to the north. The mount was garrisoned by New England troops. While more than 13,000 American soldiers occupied Ticonderoga and Mount Independence by the fall of 1776 making the area one of the largest population centers in America, surviving horns carved at Mount Independence are rather scarce.
