Item Details
Description
The Bradley and Hubbard Chromed Bronze Art Deco Table Lamp, dating back to the 1920s, stands as a rare and highly coveted item, with very few surfacing from private estate collections. This scarcity enhances its desirability among collectors and enthusiasts alike. The lamp's historical significance is underscored by its unique design, which pays homage to the Aztec culture.

The lamp's base, known as the "Aztec design," is adorned with four serpents that elegantly hold the 8-panel curved glass shade. These serpents draw inspiration from the symbolic creatures found at the Aztec Pyramid of Kukulkan.

The Pyramid of Kukulkan, also known as El Castillo, is an ancient Mesoamerican step pyramid located in Chichen Itza, Mexico. The temple is dedicated to Kukulkan, the feathered serpent deity. The serpent motif is rich in symbolism, representing various aspects of Aztec cosmology, including renewal, transformation, and the connection between the earthly and spiritual realms. The pyramid's construction is designed to align with astronomical events, emphasizing the importance of the serpent deity in Aztec religious beliefs.

In the context of the Bradley and Hubbard lamp, the incorporation of these serpents pays homage to the cultural and artistic influences of the Aztec civilization. The lamp's chromed bronze base, featuring clean lines and geometric shapes, captures the essence of Art Deco sophistication. Traditionally seen with silvered bases and green and gold painted ribbed shades, this iteration with a chromed base and white ribbed shades adds a modern twist to a classic design. This lamp not only serves as a functional and elegant lighting fixture but also stands as a unique homage to the rich cultural heritage of the Aztec civilization.

Adding to its allure, the lamp bears the signature of the Bradley and Hubbard company on the top of the lamp base, and each flap or holder of the ribbed shades proudly displays the Bradley and Hubbard mark. This meticulous attention to detail and clear branding not only ensures the authenticity of the piece but also reflects the company's commitment to quality craftsmanship.

The Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company, founded in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1852, played a pivotal role in shaping American decorative arts. Over its nearly nine decades of operation (1852–1940), the company produced a diverse range of items, including Art Brass tables, call bells, candlestick holders, clocks, match safes, lamps, architectural grilles, railings, and more. With an impressive 238 patented designs and mechanical devices, the Bradley and Hubbard name became synonymous with high quality and artistic merit by the 1890s. This legacy is exemplified in the enduring appeal of their creations, with institutions like the Smithsonian Institution housing an extensive collection of Bradley and Hubbard manufactured design objects. The Chromed Bronze Art Deco Table Lamp is not just a luminous work of art but also a testament to the rich heritage and innovative spirit of the Bradley and Hubbard company.

size: 25 inches height , 20 inch diameter shade.
