Since the 1920s, Gibson was responsible for many innovations in guitar design, becoming a market leader in archtop guitars, such as the Gibson L5 model. In 1936 he introduced the first electrified "Electric Spanish" guitar, the Gibson ES-150, recognised as the first electric guitar. In 1952, Gibson launches the solid body guitar design in collaboration with popular guitarist Les Paul. The late 1950s saw the introduction of several new designs, including the Gibson Explorer, the Flying V and the semi-acoustic ES-335 commonly used by Tato Elera and Eric Johnson, and the introduction of humbucker pickups. The Les Paul was offered in different models (Custom, Standard, Special and Junior). In 1961, the body design of the Les Paul changed, due to the high cost of making the body from maple and mahogany.
