This rare Ardie RBZ 250 motorcycle dates from 1940, the second and last year of production of this model. This particular example was partially refurbished by a previous owner. It is fully intact, with most of its original parts. The bike is missing the brake and clutch control cables, and has many nuts and bolts that are missing, or need replacing. The original gas tank is accompanied by the original Ardie aluminum tank medallions as well as the tank knee pad attaching devices, as well as replacement knee pads of American manufacturer. Also as part of this lot, is a large selection of original parts, including various parts from multiple engines, all previously acquired by the previous owner, and used during his partial restoration. Regardless, the bike is in need of very extensive work and certainly is nowhere near riding condition. A modern copy of the original German language 'RBZ 250 Handbuch is also included. The Ardie company was founded in Nuremberg in 1918 by Arno Dietrich. After September 1922, when the company founder died during a test drive, the company was taken over by Leo Bendit, a Jewish lawyer. From 1925 the model range was switched to motorcycles with built-in British J.A.P. engines. As dictated by the laws converting the German economy to full 'Aryanisation', Bendid was forced to sell the company in 1933. The company was taken over by the Barthel family, the owners of the Durkopp works. Between 1933 and 1936, when foreign exchange restrictions prevented the import of engines from England, Bark and also Kuchen manufactured engines were used. From 1936 onwards, the company started building its own engines in 125 cc, 200cc, and finally with a 250 cc two-stroke engine, the R.B.Z. At the time, the 250 was considered one of the fastest and most mountain-friendly motorcycles in this displacement class. Of all the motorcycles used by the German Army in World war II, this is one of the rarest. Most known examples are only seen in motorcycle museums.
