Description
An exemplary ‘Reichsdienstflagge’, or ‘state service flag’, 118 x 196 in., the largest of which we have ever seen. Red cotton bunting construction, with a stationary swastika within a white disc, the arms of the swastika intersecting with the edge of the disc. A national eagle is placed in the upper left canton. The hoist features a sewn-in hemp rope, looped at each end. The white reinforcement strip displays the typical black fabric woven into the bunting, indicating manufacturing in the late 1930s. The strip is marked ‘Reichsdflag’ beneath a Kreigsmarine ‘Eagle M’ acceptance stamp, further marked ‘3.0 x 5.0’. A minor hole on one of the wings of the eagle with a few moth nips surrounding, and a minimal stain also on the eagle. The ‘Reichsdienstflagge’, adopted in 1935, was required to be flown on all public service buildings, and by railway, Reichsbank and Reichsautobahn authorities. Even the Navy was required to fly a state service flag on certain occasions such as a visit from a high ranking official for inspection.
