Item Details
Description
(1882-1970) Commanded RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, and is generally credited with playing a crucial role in Britain's defense, and hence, the defeat of Hitler's plan to invade Britain. He was unwillingly replaced by Sholto Douglas in November 1940. Fine association A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Tunbridge Wells, Sept. 6, 1960, to the influential William Maxwell Aitkin, Lord Beaverbrook. In part: ‘…Next week won’t make anything easier either, what with Battle of Britain celebrations & an International Spiritualist Federation Jamboree, but after the end of the month she ought to be able to get a good rest. I have been reading your book, Politicians & the War, and I am finding it very interesting. I am very glad I am not a politician!...’. Lord Beaverbrook (1879-1964) was a controversial Canadian-British business tycoon and newspaper publisher of the conservative weekly Daily Express. Churchill appointed him as Minister of Aircraft Production in 1940, and in that capacity he overhauled all aspects of wartime production, stepping up factory efficiency in the no-holds-barred manner for which he was well-known and both praised and reviled. His early work ‘Politicians and the War’ was published in 1928. File holes at left margin, otherwise fine condition.
