Thurman Munson's Yankee Payroll Paycheck
Check, dated May 15, 1973 cut by the Bankers Trust Company in New York, NY is issued by the New York Yankees payroll account to Thurman Munson for $1,657.18. The visibly appealing check showcases the iconic Yankees logo and is stamped with the facsimile signatures of the 1973 Yankee general manager, Gabriel (Gabe) Paul, and front office executive Eugene McHale. The verso is endorsed in the hand of Diana Munson on behalf of Thurman. Check measures 3.5" x 7.5". Light soiling, cancellation marks, but overall very good condition.
Munson had an outstanding year in 1973, with 20 homers and a .301 batting average. Munson was a 7-time All-Star, 3-time Gold Glove winner, 1970 AL Rookie of the Year, and 2-time World Champion who played his entire Major League career with the Yankees (1969-79). He passed away on August 2, 1979, when the Cessna Citation plane he was piloting crashed when he was practicing touch-and-go landings at the Akron-Canton Airport near Canton, Ohio.
