Cup Recovered from Wreck of RMS Carpathia with COA from PH Nargeolet, Who Died in Titan Disaster

A Minton's Ormond pattern tea/coffee cup recovered from the wreck of the RMS Carpathia. Measuring 3.25" in diameter and 2.5" tall. Decorated with the blue and white Ormond pattern and the Cunard cruise line logo used in the first-class dining rooms in the early 1900s. A beautiful floral pattern with a floral and geometric border. Stamped with a maker mark on the base. The cup has been broken (relatively cleanly) and is missing the handle and approximately a third of the cup. It was recovered from the wreck site of the RMS Carpathia in September 2007, on an expedition lead by the late Paul-Henri Nargeolet. The cup is accompanied by a Certificate of Authentication signed by Nargeolet on December 28, 2020. Despite being broken, there is minimal chipping and the glaze has remained uncrackled. It is in remarkable condition considering that it was retrieved from the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean.

RMS Carpathia was a Cunard Line transatlantic passenger steamship. She made her maiden voyage in 1903 from Liverpool to Boston, and continued on this route before being transferred to Mediterranean service in 1904. In April 1912, she became famous for rescuing survivors of the rival White Star Line's RMS Titanic after it struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Carpathia's captain, Arthur H. Rostron, ordered the ship's heating and hot water to be cut off to provide the ship with as much steam power in order to get to the Titanic as quickly as possible. It was the only ship to respond to the distress signal, and despite arriving two hours after the Titanic had sunk, the crew still managed to rescue 706 survivors from the ship's lifeboats.

During the First World War, the Carpathia was used to transfer American and Canadian forces to Europe. On July 17, 1918 she was torpedoed by a German submarine and sunk off the southern Irish coast, with a loss of five crew members. The wreck was discovered in 1999, but it would not be until 2007 that small items such as China plates and this cup were recovered.

Paul-Henri Nargeolet (1946–2023) was a French deep sea explorer and Titanic expert, known to many in the field as "Mr. Titanic". He began his career in the French Navy, but after retirement, he turned his skills to deep-sea exploration. He was commissioned by RMS Titanic, Inc. to lead the 2007 expedition to the RMS Carpathia. Tragically, Nargeolet was one of five people who died aboard the submersible Titan when it imploded underwater on June 18, 2023, on a controversial trip to the wreck of the Titanic.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
