"Bonsoir, Man Ray" provides the reader with a biography of and interviews with Man Ray, an American artist of Russian Jewish heritage who became one of the leading artists of the Dada and Surrealist artistic movements in Europe. Although Ray primarily considered himself a painter, he also pioneered a type of photography known as the photogram, or "Rayograph," experimented with light painting, and directed avant-garde films in the 1920s. Ray lived for over half his life as an expatriate in France, from 1921-1940 and from 1951-1976.
