NOTE:
The HISTORICAL significance of this piece needs to be noted as it surely symbolizes a wonderful example of the initial design groundwork for the iconic apparel phenomenon that was soon to come… the ‘'SWEATSHIRT’!
1) This piece was manufactured as an undergarment by HIGH ROCK MILLS Philmont, NY,
2) It is unclear as to the ‘why’ their choice of the ‘henley’ style and what the origin of the original ‘henley’ design is, Perhaps, it was simply a cut off version of the popular union suit undergarment of the day. The 'henley' design is, however, rumored to have been thus named in tribute to the English town of Henley-on-Thames as its design was the traditional uniform top of its renowned rowing squad.
3) The ‘sweatshirt’ was claimed to have been invented in 1926 as a football jersey by Benjamin Russell Jr., a football player. His father, a garment manufacturer, went on to mass produce it in cotton in 1930 to give his son a more comfortable garment for his athletic endeavors than prior wool versions had been. The design was a simple crewneck with a small ‘v’ gusset detail at center front collar for added sweat absorption. And, yes… formerly the Russell Manufacturing Company, they are the Russell Athletic company we know today. https://www.russellathletic.com/blog/sweatshirt-history
