Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973). From "Service Poisson" (conceived in 1947) - Edition of 300 - Stamped, marked, and numbered on underside. Inscribed: MADOURA 13 H PR. Stamp mark is colorless. A white earthenware clay turned round bowl with decoration painted in hues of cobalt, rose, yellow, brown, and black under glaze. The design features a colorful fish surrounded by five sweeping gestural brush marks in yellow just below the rim. Among the rare limited edition ceramics Picasso created with the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris in the South of France! Size: 7.75" diameter x 2.3" H (19.7 cm x 5.8 cm)

Pablo Picasso collaborated with the Madoura pottery studio to create ceramic works for almost 25 years. Georges and Suzanne Ramie founded the Madoura Pottery studio in Vallauris, France. The Ramies are probably best known for their wonderful collaborations with Picasso which resulted in an impressive oeuvre of Picasso ceramics. The Madoura pottery studio (Madoura being an acronym for MAison + DOUly (Suzanne?s maiden name) + Ramie) opened in an abandoned factory building on April 29th, 1938. Picasso first discovered the Madoura workshop in 1946 and from then on maintained a 24-year collaboration, creating works inspired by his sketches.

This bowl was acquired by descent from Clair R. Batigne. The Batigne family acquired it when Picasso was working on his pottery in Vallauris, France in the 1940’s. The Batignes – Rene Batigne, his wife Claire, and their son Clair, operated Tapis Vert Pottery in Vallauris. Rene and Claire were friends and collaborators with Picasso on various Vallauris projects during those years. Being the director of the Vallauris Museum as well as the Vallauris Potters Association, Rene in particular worked closely with Picasso, including the annual summer expositions, the development of the War and Peace mural, and what eventually led to the realization of the Picasso museum in Vallauris. Outside the museum in a town square is situated Picasso’s sculpture L’homme at Mouton, a project that Claire Batigne was instrumental in helping to fruition. Rene wrote a memoir about Vallauris and the family’s interactions with Picasso that was eventually published by the current owner in a small edition titled PICASSO AT VALLAURIS by Rene Batigne. Clair, the current owner's stepfather, was a photographer who captured many moments of the Batignes and friends socializing with Picasso and Francoise Gilot. Clair is credited with two photos that appeared in Francoise’s book, LIFE WITH PICASSO.
