Jean de la Fontaine was without question, the most widely read 17th-century fabulist, and perhaps could be rivaled only by Aesop. In fact, his fame was so significant, that his works were emulated by numerous authors including Pierre de Saint Glas. His version of Contes was published as a new tales and curiously left his own name off of the work in hopes of gaining buyers seeking new works of Fontaine. Even still, this 1674 printing of Saint Glas is still a rare example of 17th-century fabulist literature.
