CAROL II: (1893-1953) King of Romania 1930-40. T.L.S., Carol R, two pages, 4to, Peles Castle (Sinaia, Romania), 31st August 1938, to the President of the Republic of Bolivia (German Busch), on the King’s black bordered mourning stationery featuring the Royal coat of arms at the head, in Romanian. The King writes a formal diplomatic letter following the death of his mother, ‘It is with the deepest sorrow that I fulfil the sad duty of announcing to Your Excellency the death of my very dear and beloved mother, Her Majesty Queen Marie of Romania, who died at Peles Castle on 18th July’, further continuing ‘The good relations that have always existed between Romania and Bolivia persuade me that Your Excellency will share in the deep sorrow into which this disastrous event plunges me, as well as the Royal family and the entire Romanian people’. Accompanied by an official contemporary typed translation of the letter in French, on identical mourning stationery. A few small holes to the left edge of each letter and the King’s signed letter with a small tear to the lower edge of the central vertical bifolium fold. About VG, 2
