Antoine Johannot, detto Tony Johannot, (1803-1852), fu un pittore e incisore francese: fu soprattutto uno degli illustratori più ricercati, per l’eleganza, la versatilità e il carattere vivo dei suoi disegni. È considerato senz’altro il re degli illustratori: nella prima metà del XIX secolo, nessun poema, nessun romanzo poteva essere pubblicato in Francia senza una vignetta su legno disegnata da lui.L’opera, imitazione del romanzo di Luis Vélez de Guevara “El diablo cojuelo”, consacra Le Sage come romanziere di prim’ordine. Il protagonista, lo studente don Cleofès Pérez Zambullo, viene trasportato dal diavolo Asmedès sui tetti di Madrid, per conoscere e mettere a nudo i vizi umani, la superbia, l’avarizia, l’invidia, l’ambizione. Il libro di Lesage offre un ritratto del mondo dei suoi tempi esaltandone più i vizi che le virtù, seguendo un impianto narrativo più incline alla commedia che alla tragedia, in cui prevale l’ironia, la leggerezza e il senso dell’umorismo.

The many woodcuts that dot the volume are by Tony Johannot and illustrated with particular grace and a sense of humor all the salient passages of the novel. Antoine Johannot, known as Tony Johannot, (1803-1852), was a French painter and engraver: above all he was one of the most sought-after illustrators, due to the elegance, versatility and lively character of his drawings. He is undoubtedly considered the king of illustrators: in the first half of the 19th century, no poem, no novel could be published in France without a woodcut cartoon drawn by him.The work, an imitation of Luis Vélez de Guevara's novel “El diablo cojuelo”, established Le Sage as a first-rate novelist. The protagonist, the student Don Cleofès Pérez Zambullo, is transported by the devil Asmedès to the rooftops of Madrid, to learn about and expose human vices, pride, avarice, envy, ambition. Lesage's book offers a portrait of the world of his time, extolling its vices more than its virtues, following a narrative structure more inclined towards comedy than tragedy, in which irony, light-heartedness and a sense of humor prevail.
