Description
Northwestern Europe, United Kingdom, Birmingham, ca. 1820s CE. A superb bronze commemorative medal or large token by Faulkner, undated but likely circa 1823. The obverse face of the "Pantechnetheca" showing the facade of this classical building, inscription "REPOSITORY OF ALL THE ARTS / CHARLES JONES / BIRMINGHAM" and smaller artist name "FAULKNER F." The reverse shows Art crowned by two graces. The Pantechnetheca was one of the most unique Regency buildings built in Birmingham during this time, designed by Thomas Stedman Whitwell and owned by Charles Jones. The Greek Revival building began in 1823, the name of the building was spelled out in large Greek letters at the top and the building functioned as a showroom for manufactured luxury items and art gallery, medal tokens such as this commemorating this architectural masterpiece and promoting the commercial space. The ultimate cost of Pantechnetheca bankrupted Jones in the late 1830s. Size: 2.5" Diameter (6.4 cm); 132.1 grams
Charles Jones was a Birmingham silversmith and issued his own love themed tokens, it is likely Jones employed or hired Faulkner.
