Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Greater Nicoya or Atlantic Watershed, Period IV, ca. 300 to 500 CE. A large hand-carved basalt grinding platform called a metate that may have served a higher purpose besides food preparation. Around the rim are rectangular tabs with linear carvings - possibly stylized jaguar or human faces, but too faint to determine, and the front legs have relief arms and hands on the surface - this may have been a part of an openwork decoration that connected to the large rim tab. Metates were initially humble, utilitarian tools for grinding corn; however, the objects evolved into meaningful ritualized pieces, replete with strong iconography and intriguing sculptural forms - some may have even functioned as seats for special individuals, and others have been found in burials. Size: 17.5" L x 15" W x 9" H (44.4 cm x 38.1 cm x 22.9 cm)
