Of rectangular form, overall inlaid with geometric outlines, the outer borders and edges of the drawers inlaid with ivory and ebony mouldings, with twelve drawers and a pair of cupboard doors enclosing an architectural interior fitted with nine variously sized drawers and a balustraded interior with checker floor, the stand with faceted legs joined by a box stretcher, on shaped ball feet, some losses to veneer, especially to the stand, 97cm wide, 37.5cm deep, 144cm high (38in wide, 14 1/2in deep, 56 1/2in high).
Footnotes:
Provenance:
Property from a Royal Collection

This cabinet-on-stand overall inlaid with red-stained horn simulating tortoiseshell and contrasting ivory is related to the work of the celebrated Louis XIV ébéniste Pierre Gole working alongside André-Charles Boulle.
With a high visual impact, the modernistic façade with its geometric inlay is particularly attractive, but slightly differs from Gole's oeuvre which often incorporates floral marquetry, pewter and brass inlays, mother-of-pearl and rich ormolu mounts in its cabinets. Furthermore, the inventory after Gole's death lists only thirteen cabinets in his atelier from two hundred finished other lots. These cabinets were elaborate and expensive, making them difficult to sell. Our cabinet-on-stand must have been executed by an ébéniste close to or in the circle of Pierre Gole as there was a high demand for these masterpieces with innovative features and striking looks.
