Found in Upstate New York, it is possible these shadowbox figures represent performers from one of the several African American groups that performed at the Chautauqua Assembly in the 1870s and 1880s. These groups included the Fisk Jubilee Singers, Donavin's Original Tennesseans, and the The North Carolinians.
Founded in Chautauqua, New York in 1874 as a retreat for Methodist Sunday School teachers, it evolved into a social movement focusing on the arts, education, religion, social justice and music.
