A MID 19TH CENTURY COLONIAL CARVED COCONUT BUG BEAR POWDER FLASK dated 1852, decorated with assorted animals and heart shaped motifs, the terminal of typical form. 12 cm x 8 cm. Note: 'Bugbear' coconut flasks were carved by sailors or soldiers on long sea voyages who visited the East or West Indies in the late 18th/early 19th centuries. The 'green' coconut shells were easier to carve before they dried, whilst they were still fresh.
