Description
Northeastern India / Northwestern Burma, Naga people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of weapons / tools used by Naga tribe richly ornamented with dyed animal hair; an iron tipped spear and iron axe /sword known as a "dao" in a waist belt sheath. The spear shaft is covered with a dense pile of goat / horsehair secured by tightly wrapping the hairs with cord over the wood, leaving an area open for the handle in the center, bordered by braided rattan. The dao axe has a long wooden handle covered in rattan and pitch, also decorated with dense hair tassels, and a special wood sheath with a large waist band made of curved wood panels covered in cloth and dozens of white cowrie shell beads arranged in neat rows Size of spear: 54.75" L x 2" W (139.1 cm x 5.1 cm)

Condition
Losses to the wood before the iron axe blade, patina and oxidation to iron blade. Hairs and rattan pitch covered handle is otherwise intact. Belt sheath is in great condition with a few areas of repair - rattan hinge on one belt panel is a replacement and the other has a small wire holding it in place. Small tear to the cotton cloth covering. Spear is in great condition, chips to one end of wood pole and patina to iron tip. Some wear to hair, but otherwise great condition.
