Description

Authentic vintage map of Pennsylvania, produced by one of the better American map publishing firms of the 19th century. Dated 1850 and reissued in Cowperthwaitâ€™s 1853 New Universal Atlas. Filled with numerous topographical details, the map also precisely locates rivers, towns, lakes and political borders. Railroads are highlighted in orange with canals depicted in blue. Highly detailed with towns, rivers, lakes and topographical detailing. Cowperthwait maps are known for their depiction of the transportation routes of the various states, which is why they are so highly collectible. The transportation infrastructure was extremely important at this period of increased immigration and travel and the map reflects this. This type of information is clearly depicted here, including rail lines, steamboat routes, canals and roads. Of added interest is the table of distances along steamboat routes that appears in the lower left, and a profile of the Pennsylvania Canal and the Columbia Railroad that appears along the top. The way the map is presented, with its signature frame and original hand coloring, is why Cowperthwait maps are sought after. Repaired tear at upper right margin corner (wonâ€™t show when matted).
