Description
possibly Mid Atlantic, circa 1790-1810, with later elements, serpentine crest rail, incurvate shaped arms, red wool upholstery, square legs and stretcher, together with a custom matching reproduction chair made by Mark Minor in Salida, Colorado (who performed the conservation treatment on the Federal period chair); 39-1/2 x 28-1/2 x 24 in.
Provenance: Period chair purchased through Clark Pearce, Essex, Massachusetts, for $5,500; Estate of Steven Murphy, Fort Collins, Colorado
Condition
Federal period chair is structurally sound with extensive restoration (see attached treatment report and extant photos by Mark Minor), birch plywood panels added to seat rail and frame to stabilize frame for upholstery, upholstery not removed for further examination, upholstery with minor discolorations, legs and stretcher with scattered abrasions and surface wear; reproduction chair in generally good condition with minor surface wear from use, upholstery in good condition with minor abrasion on rear side
