Description
Estate / Collection: Property from the Collection of Rosa and Aaron Esman
JOUFFROY, ALAIN and RENÉ MAGRITTE, illustrator
Aube à l'antipode. Carnets de bord tenus sous forme de notes analogiques expéditives. Dessins de René Magritte. Paris: Le Soleil Noir, 1966. Hors commerce copy of the exemplaire de tete (17 numbered, some h.c.) with the separate suite of seven pencil signed and editioned plates housed in the sleeve of issue. Publisher's wrappers, the book housed in the dark blue calf and cloth book-box designed by Magritte, with a bell/rattle affixed to the interior flap of the box, the box executed by the Atelier Duval. The book 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (19.25 x 14 cm); 128, [6] pp., illustrated. The etched suite, with the plates individually signed by Magritte and lettered H.C. H/O (i.e. 15 lettered copies total) is housed in the original linen-backed boards with title label, the label lettered "H." The book box exhibits wear to the front joint, the folder for the suite has some minor toning, the prints within are in extremely fresh condition. A letter of authentication from the publisher—Le Soleil Noir—is laid in.
This issue of Magritte's surrealist masterpiece with the signed, lettered plates, the book, and the Magritte-designed box with rattle has become vanishingly rare, as the majority of copies have been broken for the plates.
