Item Details
Description
An album of commercial albumen scenic photographs, c. Mid-Late 19th Century. Half gilt green morocco and pebbled green cloth, 11in x 15in. Consisting of 37 board leaves of over 90 photographs (tipped-in/laid down), ranging from approx. 8 1/4in x 6 1/4in and 6in x 10in, to 7 1/2in x 11 1/2in. Some are unmarked, but most bear the title and photographer's initials in the plate, including: "J.V."; and "G.W.W." for Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson (1823-1893), who had a contract with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and developed techniques for outdoor photography and mass production. Images include cathedrals (exterior and interior), grand homes and castles, landscapes, architecture, and town/city scenes. Locations include Leamington and Warwick Castles, Kenliworth Castle, Stonleigh Abbey, Stratford (including Shakespeare sights), Liverpool, Oxford, Richmond, the Crystal Palace, Westminster Abbey, St. Pauls, and other London locations. Of note: there are a few images of docks in Liverpool, some with crowds, including George's and Prince's Landings, and an image of the White Star S. S. Germanic at dock. Condition: Most of the photos are tipped-in or partially laid down, so there is some wrinkling, as they are not completely flat/adhered to the leaves. However, overall the photos are good. The album with wear to ends of spine and corners. FROM THE FAMILY OF REV. CHARLES HARTWELL (1825-1905) and Lucy Estabrook Stearns Hartwell (1827-1883); their children Charles Stearns Hartwell (1855-1931), Emily Susan Hartwell (1859-1951), and Carrie Amelia Hartwell Tupper (1864-1959); Congregational missionaries and philanthropists in Foochow (Fuzhou), China, 1850s-1930s.
