Description
An exceptional early coat from a culture which produced the finest Islamic arms, very rarely encountered on the market. Composed of large, flat rings, each closed with double rivets rivet and struck on the obverse with an endless rope motif and on the reverse with concentric rings, as is characteristic. Reaching from neck to mid-thigh and closed with four large clasps of split-palmette design, the upper two of silver, the lower of steel. Vented at the rear hem, with three-quarter sleeves as is typical and a small opening for pockets at either side. The collar intact, retaining most hide lacing. Set with a copper plaque engraved with the Mamluk lion blazon at the right side. 15th-16th century. Very minor losses. Ex- Higgins Armory Museum, Worcester, MA., reportedly acquired in the 1930s, whence it was cleaned and maintained, with a number of missing rings replaced. Height from nape to hem 87cm/ 34.24”. Coats from this group are found in the Askeri Muzesi, Istanbul, among others. Condition II PLEASE NOTE: MANNEQUIN NOT INCLUDED
