Description
A Very Good Azande Figure Central African Republic/Democratic Republic of Congo/Southern Sudan, Late 19th to first half of the 20th century The rotund female standing on short legs, with hands to sides; she has a broad face with small white glass beads inset at eyes; wearing one metal earring with a white glass bead, a glass bead belt, and a metal anklet on her proper left foot. Small pieces of bone inset in abdomen. The wood covered with a black substance. In very good condition, appropriate for its age, mediums, and use, crack across nose bridge, the layer of black substance flaked off here and there. Note: African art historian Roy Sieber commented that this Azande figure is "very good". This is a type of figure that has been copied in more recent times.
