The 1990’s were a very productive period for Joseph Norman. He started the Kafka series in 1994, a “lush and eccentric series of fish heads…following an encounter with Kafka’s writings.” (Berlin Autumn catalogue). This numbered print was purchased by one of Norman’s early supporters in Providence part of a Patron Portfolio to finance Norman’s art and travels. A similar Kafka work to this one is in the RISD Museum collection, Providence, RI. with a variation of the bottom imagery. There are several other prints by Norman in the RISD Museum of Art Collection donated by Joseph Chazan when Norman was on the RISD Faculty, teaching Foundation Drawing.Widely considered the most important African American lithographer of his generation, master draughtsman Joseph Norman has sought to retell hidden, muted, or silenced stories of the African American experience. His expressive work and use of symbolic motifs communicate a vivid sense of place, history, struggle and hope. Norman is in the permanent collections of the The Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Museum, Rhode Island School of Design and the Newport Art Museum
