Description
Campania. Neapolis. AR Didrachm (7.46g), ca. 380 BC. ANS 296; HN Italy 565. Very rare. Old cabinet tone. Well centered and struck. Exceptional for issue. A portrait of Parthenope of enchanting beauty! Choice extremely fine. Acquired privately from Tradart, Brussels; Numismatica Ars Classica 2000 (18) lot 7.
A dramatic love story! Many legends try to explain the birth of Naples. Its origin is often dated back to the myth of Parthenope and Odysseus, a love story that is a bit complex and certainly dramatic. Parthenope was a mermaid who lived among the rocks in the middle of the sea. During his return from the Trojan war, Odysseus came to the place where the mermaids lived. Parthenope was impressed and fascinated by the hero; in love... that beautiful creature tried in vain to seduce him. Heartbreaked, the unfortunate mermaid cast herself into the sea, drowned, and washed ashore at Naples, where she was honored as the local goddess.
