Description
The lot features a wonderful buffalo hide parfleche lined beaded sheath from the Southern Plains with 1900-1940’s trade knife. The sheath is comprised of Indian brain tanned buffalo / bison hide sinew sewn to the parfleche rawhide lining and covered in geometric Southern Plains pattern beadwork. The beadwork is all glass trade seed beads showing a chalk white base with pattern in red white heart, medium blue and light blue. The sheath has beaded fringes with rolled tin jingle cones on the end and a hide belt tie. The piece is paired with a 1900-1940’s Wards Keen Edge Stainless steel butchers or kitchen trade knife with two piece handle secured with pins and inlayed with brass caps as well as being adorned with brass covered metal trade tacks. The sheath has well kept bright supple hides with some signs of use and little to no bead loss. Likely in Osage pattern. Provenance: From the Jim Bastian collection. Sheath measures 17”L with belt tie and fringes by 3” W. Knife is 11 5/8”L.
