Item Details
Description
For your consideration is this 1912 1st edition of "Riders of the Purple Sage" by Zane Grey, published by Harper & Brothers. A prolific American writer known for his significant contributions to Western literature in the early 20th century, Zane Grey was born in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1872. Although he started out as a successful dentist, he soon realized that writing, especially about the American West, was his true calling. Unquestionably, Grey had an impact on the Western subgenre, as his books contributed to the genre's rise to literary fame. His writings were renowned for their vivid depictions of untamed landscapes, cowboys, and the difficulties of frontier life, and his readers were transported to the West by his descriptive prose. He wrote more than 60 novels and a large number of short stories over the course of his career, including well-known pieces like "Riders of the Purple Sage," "The Lone Star Ranger," and "The Last of the Plainsmen." These books were wildly popular in his day and are still highly regarded by fans of the Old West and those who are interested in the history of the American frontier. Grey left a lasting legacy that goes beyond literature thanks to his conservation efforts, close friendship with Theodore Roosevelt, and support for safeguarding the natural splendor of the American West. When it was first released in 1912, "Riders of the Purple Sage" became one of Zane Grey's most well-known and enduring Western books. It is a classic of the Western genre and is set against the backdrop of the unforgiving and untamed American West. The story follows Jane Withersteen, the protagonist, a self-reliant woman with a successful cattle ranch in the border region of Utah. When Jane rejects the oppressive and morally rigid rule of the local Mormon church, her life takes a dramatic turn. Later, a mysterious gun-wielding rider, shows up amid all of this commotion. He becomes involved in Jane's struggle to defend her ranch and her independence. The gunman, Lassiter, is motivated by his own desire for retribution and justice. To combat the corrupt and oppressive forces that jeopardize Jane's freedom and way of life, they come together in an unlikely alliance. Secrets come to light as the plot develops, and Lassiter, who is determined to keep Jane safe, falls in love. The book examines issues like social justice, religious intolerance, and the struggle in the American West between individual freedom and governmental authority. The book shows a rare, all green cover with a stamped design set in the center. The spine shows stamped floral designs and gold gilt lettering reading, "Riders of the Purple Sage / Zane Grey / Tales of the Frontier". The book shows good condition overall with some wear from its age and use over the years but no signs of obvious damage are present. The interior pages show good condition with no foxing present. The book measures 7 3/4" L x 5" W x 1 1/2" D and weighs 14 ounces.
