"The History of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" complete and unabridged in three [3] volumes by Edward Gibbon, edited by J.B. Bury, with Notes by Gibbon, illustrated with engravings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, and the Introduction and the Index as prepared by Professor Bury, also with A Letter to the Reader from Philip Guedalla; published by Heritage Press, 1946. Six-page Heritage Press brochure Sandglass which is dedicated to this edition, is attached to the first blank page vol.1.
Illustrated hard boards, cloth spines, gold lettering on spines [a little wear]; 6.1/4" x 9.1/2"; 5.1/2" shelf space; the endpapers are maps, vintage bookplate inside front cover volume one, '90' is ink written on the title page volume one, lxi + 2537 pages including Index. Page lxi has a large corner fold, a little wear, very good condition.
Volume One has 16 illustrations with two maps. Volume Two 16 illustrations. Volume Three contains 16 illustrations and an index. The illustrations are printed in sepia tones and completed using a photogravure process.
Edward Gibbon's masterpiece, which narrates the history of the Roman Empire from the second century A.D. to its collapse in the west in the fifth century and in the east in the fifteenth century, is widely considered the greatest work of history ever written.
The first edition of Gibbon's "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" was originally published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788.
