A Japanese Carved Stone Sculpture of Jizo Bosatsu
20th century, a carved stone sculpture of Jizo standing holding a wishing stone and carrying a monk's staff, he stands atop a carved lotus base, an arch support behind him in engraved in Japanese characters, uneven carving to reverse side, comes together with a later carved wooden stand.
19 3/4 x 10 x 8 in.
Jizo is a bodhisattva (bosatsu) beloved in Japan and believed to be the protector of children and travelers. This Jizo stone sculpture originally stood on the grounds of a temple in Japan.
