Description
Jacob De Wit (Dutch, 1695-1754) A Flying Putto unsigned; attributed by Dr. A.W.F.M. Meij, (former) curator of Museum Boijmans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam (according to an inscription on the backing paper); inscribed 'Boucher' (in graphite on the reverse); inscribed 'Burlington Magazine - Dec 1979 - London' (on the reverse of the frame) conté crayon with white highlights on blue paper 29.0 x 24.8 cm (11 7/16 x 9 3/4 in). framed 46.5 x 40.3 x 5.0 cm (18 5/16 x 15 7/8 x 2 in). Footnotes: N.B. This work is a wonderful example of the depth and liveliness that Jacob de Wit was able to evoke using blue paper and black chalk. The putto's gently round belly, soft curls, and natural movement are hallmarks of de Wit's ability to bring drawn bodies to life.
