One of Israel’s most famous and accomplished field archaeologists, Ladin clearly influenced Feldman on his views of Masada and its’ importance to Jewish History. Feldman has a personalized copy of Yadin’s archeological publication on Masada. Feldman started his series of print and paintings on the Masada legacy of Jewish resistance and courage. Masada is a remarkable story that intrigued Feldman. Masada is a symbol of the ancient kingdom of Israel, its violent destruction and a last stand of Jewish rebels fighting against the oppression of the Romans. Feldman explores the theme of Masada, producing a large body of work devoted to the subject matter. He is torn between seeing Masada as a victory or defeat for the Jewish people. Feldman came to Brown University in 1953 after getting an MFA from Yale and teaching there for 2 years. He won a Fulbright scholarship in 1957. His works have been included in one person and group exhibitions at major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art.
