GEOFF WINNINGHAM
Geoff Winningham was born March 4, 1943, in Jackson, Tennessee. He graduated with a B.A. degree in English from Rice University in Houston, Texas, in 1965. He earned his Master's degree in photography from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1968, where he studied with Aaron Siskind and Arthur Siegel. Since 1969 he has been a professor of art and photography at Rice University and currently holds the Lynette S. Autrey Chair in the Humanities. Winningham has published 14 books and three films over the course of his career. In the 1970s, he worked with a 35 mm camera and chronicled unique aspects of life in Texas such as professional wrestling matches, rodeos, gun and stock shows, Friday night high school football, and rock and roll and country music concerts. Collectively, these experiences led to Winningham's now well-known trilogy of publications including Friday Night at the Coliseum, Going Texan, and Rites of Fall. They are now considered classic studies in photojournalism. In the 1980s, Winningham began photographing in color, concentrating on Mexican culture, particularly siestas and celebrations, which culminated in the publication of In the Eye of the Sun. Since the late 1990s-early 2000s, Winningham has embraced landscape photography and panoramic images.
Geoff Winningham is the recipient of two Guggenheim fellowships, and five National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. His photographs are in the permanent collections of institutions such as: The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; J. Paul Getty Museum, Library of Congress, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Harvard University; Princeton University; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Rice University, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, and the Center for Creative Photography.
